UN Security Council backs cease-fire plan | DW News

The UN Security Council has adopted a resolution endorsing a Gaza cease-fire plan. The proposal, sponsored by US President Joe Biden, outlines a plan to end the war in Gaza that Israel launched in response to Hamas terrorist attacks on October 7 last year. It also states that Israel has accepted the ceasefire proposal.

The three-phase plan would begin with a hostage-prisoner exchange and a short-term cease-fire. The second phase would include a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and a "permanent end to hostilities. The final phase would see the start of a massive internationally-backed reconstruction plan for Gaza, while the remains of slain hostages would also be returned.

In a statement, Hamas welcomed the adoption of US-drafted resolution and said it was ready to cooperate with mediators in implementing the plan’s principles, "which are in line with the demands of our people and the resistance."
