The first US-born pope spent his home country’s 250th birthday meeting migrants on Lampedusa, preaching compassion for refugees and honoring people who have drowned in the Mediterranean trying to reach Europe. Pope Leo’s trip comes amid a crackdown on immigration in the US, and as the EU rolls out stricter-than-ever asylum rules designed to speed up deportations.
