Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan spoke out about Kevin Costner’s controversial exit from the show. During his June 28 appearance on the Bill Simmons Podcast, Sheridan revealed, “Kevin was initially only supposed to be in the first three seasons. That was in his contract. He had other things he wanted to do, but he stayed on for another two seasons.” While Kevin’s John Dutton character was killed off in the series’ final season—amid rumors of a falling out between him and Sheridan—the producer and director says the actor simply wanted to shift his focus, and it was hard for Kevin to walk away from the show given its success and popularity.
