US President Donald Trump says his relationship with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping is ‘very strong’ after a whirlwind two-day summit in Beijing. President Trump had said he wanted the focus of the talks to be on trade, but few concrete deals were announced. The leaders did discuss Iran, with China’s foreign minister calling for the Strait of Hormuz to be reopened. But in an interview with Fox News, President Trump said the US doesn’t need the Strait to be open "at all".
Political uncertainty simmers in the UK, with Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham securing a pathway to potentially challenge Keir Starmer for the prime minister’s job. Burnham plans to seek permission to stand in a special election in Makerfield, where the MP has resigned to make way for him.
