Signal gate: Hegseth and JD Vance nonetheless declare nothing within the chat was categorized | DW News
You may remember that iconic photo from 2011, when former US President Barak Obama and his national security team were seen watching live updates when al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was killed in Pakistan. The president and his team were inside the White House Situation Room. All communication was restricted to this room for obvious security reasons.
No one was on their private phones sending texts about covert plans. We cannot say the same about the new Trump administration. This week it was revealed that Trump’s top defense and intel people messaged each other with details about attacking the Houthi rebels in Yemen. Not only did they use a commercial app, they also apparently had invited a journalist to take part in the chat.
The journalist is how we found about about the chat, which has exploded into a scandal reaching all the way to the White House. And yet, despite the content of their chat now public, for all the world to see, Trump’s Secretary of Defense, National Intelligence head and the CIA Director all insist they discussed nothing that was classified. This did not sit well with some members of Congress.
