Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene broadcasts invoice to rename ‘Gulf of Mexico’ as ‘Gulf of America’
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene said Tuesday she is writing legislation to officially rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America, as she moves to carry out one of President-elect Donald Trump’s latest territorial ideas.
Ms. Greene said it is U.S. might that polices and protects the gulf, so America should get the naming rights.
“It’s our gulf. The rightful name is the Gulf of America and it’s what the entire world should refer to it as,” the Georgia Republican said.
She said the legislation is being written and will officially be introduced on Thursday.
Mr. Trump has become fixated on geography in recent weeks.
He suggested that Greenland and Canada should become part of the U.S. and said he’s in negotiations with Panama about retaking control of the Panama Canal.
He floated the idea of renaming the gulf on Tuesday, during a news conference where he complained about cartels using the gulf to transport drugs.
“We’re going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring,” he said. “That covers a lot of territory. The Gulf of America, what a beautiful name and it’s appropriate.”
Ms. Greene’s current draft of her legislation orders the federal government to start using the name “Gulf of America” in its regular business, and to update maps and documents to reflect that.
The name Gulf of Mexico has been used for more than four centuries to describe the waters south of the U.S. and east of Mexico.
Mexico claims slightly more coastline on the Gulf than the U.S. does.
