Nigeria has denied that the US military’s Christmas Day airstrikes were targeting a specific religion. The US launched several attacks against Islamic State militants in northwestern Nigeria. President Trump said the strikes aimed to protect Christians who he claimed were being ‘slaughtered’ by the militants. However, the Nigerian government, which cooperated with the US action, claims that Islamist insurgents target both Christians and Muslims.
