US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has been holding talks with Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
At a joint press conference in Budapest, Orban said Hungary, which maintains close ties to Russia, backs US peace efforts in Ukraine. He reiterated his offer to host a peace summit between Ukraine and Russia. Rubio’s Budapest visit is being seen as a campaign boost for a likeminded ally. Orban’s right-wing Fidesz party is trailing the opposition, ahead of legislative elections in April.
After the meeting, Rubio praised the close personal relationship between Orban and President Trump as the core of US-Hungarian relations.
