Haiti’s important airport shuts down as gang violence surges | DW News

US aviation authorities have banned all US civilian flights to Haiti for 30 days after three commerical planes were hit by gunfire. Haiti’s main airport remains closed after gangs targeted the aircraft. The violence came on the same day the country’s new interim prime minister was sworn in. Businessman Alix Didier Fils-Aimé is pledging to rescue the country – a task which numerous predecessors have failed. Around 85% of the capital is controlled by gangs, hundreds of thousands have been displaced, and parts of the country are on the brink of the famine.
