Germany is digitally arming up OR Germany boosts its digital defenses | DW News
Germany is a prime target for cyberattacks. In a more conflict‑driven world, digital attacks are becoming weapons. Now the government plans to expand its capabilities and move toward active cyber defense.
Germany has seen several high‑profile examples in recent years.
In April 2026, authorities in Germany and the U.S. warned that a group connected to Russia’s military intelligence had been exploiting vulnerable internet routers in Germany. Their aim: to intercept sensitive data, including potentially important information linked to government or critical infrastructure.
In February 2026, Germany’s largest railway operator Deutsche Bahn was hit by a distributed denial‑of‑service (DDoS) attack — a coordinated flood of requests designed to overload servers and force systems offline.
According to media reports and security sources Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) was also targeted in 2024. The attack disrupted parts of the airport’s administrative IT infrastructure, though flight operations were not affected. Investigations by German authorities revealed that a Russian hacker group was involved.
