Freedom of meeting below risk in Hungary – debate
MEPs ask the Commission about respect for European values in Hungary, as the government has banned Budapest Pride.
Hungary’s parliament amended the rules on public assemblies in March 2025. This enabled authorities to decide that pro-LGBTIQ+ gatherings infringe the Child Protection Act – implicitly targeting Budapest Pride’s 30th edition, scheduled for 28 June 2025.
MEPs visited Hungary in April 2025 and warned that the government’s ban on pro-LGBTIQ+ public events is not just an attack on the community, but a direct violation of the basic human and civil rights enshrined in the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights and the EU’s core values.
The EU Court of Justice’s Advocate General recently deemed Hungary’s Child Protection Act incompatible with EU law. Based on this, MEPs are set to demand that the Commission apply interim measures as part of the ongoing trial, so that the Court of Justice of the EU can order this legislation to be suspended.
