Floods in Europe: Parliament asks extra funds for higher preparedness
Following the severe floods that have affected Central and Eastern Europe over the weekend, the European Parliament will discuss how the European Union can prepare and prevent for such extreme weather events.
Heavy rain across central Europe has killed at least 14 people. Austria, Czechia, Poland and Romania have been hit the hardest.
Increasingly frequent and severe droughts are becoming more common as climate change progresses. They are straining water resources, impacting crop yields, and threatening food security across Europe. Heatwaves and heavy rainfall cause crop failures, soil erosion, and damage to infrastructure.
Addressing these issues is essential not only for protecting the livelihoods of communities dependent on farming and rural economies but also for safeguarding agricultural productivity.
