Former Man Utd goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar has backed Andre Onana to come good at Old Trafford after a series of high-profile mistake have led to the Cameroon international facing criticism recently.
Onana put himself in the firing line following a pair of howlers in Man Utd’s Europa League quarter-final first leg against Lyon and was labelled "one of the worst goalkeepers in the club’s history" by former United midfielder Nemanja Matic.
United have since been linked with moves for alternative goalkeepers – including Southampton’s Aaron Ramsdale – but Van der Sar, who won four Premier League titles at United, believes Onana can step up and prove himself.
"I have a great connection with Andre, I’ve seen him train, I’ve trained with him and I’m sure he’s going to cope with the pressure," he said.
"Sometimes you go through a rough patch but I think he’s a very strong character."
