Ebola Outbreak in DR Congo Expands – What Are the Risks? | DW News
The World Health Organization is warning that the Ebola outbreak in eastern Congo is spreading faster than efforts to contain it.
More than 900 suspected cases and over 200 suspected deaths have been reported, making this one of the fastest-growing Ebola outbreaks on record. Unlike previous outbreaks, the Bundibugyo strain currently spreading in the region has no approved vaccine or treatment.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus visited the epicenter of the outbreak in Bunia city as international aid arrives in an effort to slow transmission.
In this DW New report, DW News speaks with WHO spokesperson Christian Lindmeier and microbiologist Jason Kindrachuk about the risks, the response effort, and whether the outbreak could spread beyond the region.
