Democratic Lawmaker Trolls Trump With Snarky Twist On ‘President Elon’ Diss

Rep. Dan Goldman (D-N.Y.) lobbed an insult that would almost certainly get under Donald Trump’s skin on Thursday after Elon Musk helped tank a Republican government spending bill the day before.

Wednesday’s development led Democrats to suggest the Tesla CEO is Trump’s “shadow president,” and prompted “President Musk” to trend on the billionaire’s X social media platform.

Goldman suggested Trump might fall even lower in the pecking order during an appearance on MSNBC’s “All In With Chris Hayes.” Hayes had called Trump and Musk “the two co-presidents-elect.”

“We need to face the reality: Right now, we have President Elon Musk,” Goldman said. “And Donald Trump, maybe he’s vice president. I guess vice presidents don’t do much, so that makes sense. He might be the chief of staff.”

Goldman argued that Musk “has no idea how government operates or how government runs” and has “his own very self-interested view of everything.”

He also pointed out that Musk spent more than a quarter of a billion dollars to help elect Trump, and that Trump still stands to make financial gains from the relationship if a rumored merger between their respective social media platforms were to actually take place.

“Elon Musk has Donald Trump in a vice, and it is very clear that Elon Musk is now calling the shots,” Goldman said.

On social media Wednesday, Musk publicly pressed against a bipartisan deal negotiated by House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.). Trump eventually spoke out against the measure himself, scrambling the plans with days before the deadline to prevent a government shutdown.

Trump’s spokesperson pushed back on assertions that Musk is pulling the strings in a statement to The Associated Press.

“As soon as President Trump released his official stance on the CR, Republicans on Capitol Hill echoed his point of view,” Karoline Leavitt said, referring to the failed stopgap measure. “President Trump is the leader of the Republican Party. Full stop.”
