Iran Rejects US Talks as Hormuz Deal Stalls | Horizons Middle East & Africa 8/10/2026

Global markets are watching renewed tensions between Iran and the US as Tehran rejects talks and the prospects of a deal with Oman to reopen the Strait of Hormuz remain uncertain. Oil prices gained as investors assessed the risk of prolonged disruption, while President Trump said the US is closely monitoring developments in Iran and their economic impact.
Asian stocks advanced following stronger US jobs data, while Japan’s shares rose on earnings optimism. In South Korea, a rotation away from leveraged ETFs helped drive a 30% surge in small-cap stocks. China’s inflation cooled as the impact of the Iran-related oil shock eased.
US monetary policy remains in focus as divisions among Federal Reserve officials over potential rate hikes deepen. Treasury officials are also debating whether to reduce the size of bond auctions, while Wall Street sees growing signs of stress in the bond market. The yen weakened after its earlier gains following the US jobs data, and Japanese government bonds tracked higher Treasury yields.
In the Middle East, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan agreed to strengthen cooperation against security threats through a trilateral defense framework. Turkey said the pact could eventually expand to include Egypt. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected a 15-point plan and Trump’s proposal for Hamas to disarm as he prepares for a potential October election.
In business, Berkshire Hathaway continued reducing its cash pile, Apple is exploring a major redesign of its smartwatch lineup, and ADNOC Gas reported second-quarter net income above expectations despite a sharp decline in revenue and EBITDA. The company also restored the Habshan complex to 85% capacity ahead of schedule.
Elsewhere, Cameroon faces growing investor concerns over President Paul Biya’s prolonged absence from public life, with Eurobonds under pressure and opposition leaders calling for a transition of power. Guests includes Charles-Henry Monchau, Banque SYZ CIO, Ryan Bohl, RANE Senior Middle East & North Africa Analyst and Peter Van Driel, ADNOC Gas CFO.
