Trump Branded ‘Pathetic And Deranged’ After Rambling Address On Election Conspiracies
The reviews are in for President Donald Trump’s much-anticipated Thursday night speech about supposed interference in the 2020 election, and they range from alarmist to mockery.
In a rambling, nearly 30-minute address to the nation, Trump rehashed debunked election conspiracies. The president also announced he had declassified documents that he claims show impropriety in the 2020 election, which he lost to Joe Biden.
Among other things, Trump claims the documents show China interfered in the election. However, many of the documents actually show that China wanted Trump defeated in 2020 and Russia worked to hurt Biden’s campaign.
Lawmakers and political pundits had varied reactions to Trump’s claims, with many saying the speech and document dump is designed to sow doubt on the upcoming midterm elections.
Some lawmakers, including Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.) and Rep. Jim Himes (D-Conn.), suggested Trump may use the pretense of alleged Chinese interference to send Homeland Security officers or the military to seize ballot boxes in Democratic states.
Other critics expressed concern for Trump’s mental fitness for office, with Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) calling the president “pathetic and deranged.”
California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) called for the 25th Amendment to be invoked.
