Ferris Bueller’s Day Off star Mia Sara reflected on her complicated experience making the beloved ’80s classic. In a new interview with The Times, the actress admitted that filming the movie “was not that good an experience” for her, though she understands how much the film means to fans. Sara, who played Sloane Peterson opposite Matthew Broderick, said much of her discomfort came from not getting along with director John Hughes, referring to him as a “strange guy.” The movie was only her second film, and Sara said she didn’t yet have the maturity to navigate the personalities and pressures around her. She largely retired from acting however returned to the big screen for 2024’s The Life Of Chuck. She added there are parts of her career she’s proud of—but overall, acting was not a happy path for her.
