EU-US trade: Parliament approves stronger safeguards for EU industry and farmers.

Members of the European Parliament gave the green light to two pieces of legislation on EU tariff commitments under the EU-US Joint Statement. Parliament aims to balance trade facilitation with protecting the EU’ s economic interests, strategic industries and agricultural sector.

The new adopted pieces of legislation substantially improve the European Commission’s original proposals.

Parliament:

⚖️ reinforces provisions to ensure fair and balanced implementation in case US fails to respect terms of agreement

🛡️introduces a sunset clause, meaning tariff preferences on industrial and agri-food imports will expire on 31 December 2029 unless renewed

✅ensures the Commission will need to make a comprehensive assessment of its trade effects on EU industry, agriculture and small and medium-sized enterprises

🏭 establishes clear conditions for tariff reductions on steel and aluminium derivatives.

Once the Council formally adopts it, the regulation will enter into force on the day after its publication in the EU’s Official Journal.
