The Middle East disaster and Europe’s vitality wants
Rising energy bills are once again putting pressure on households, businesses and transport across Europe. As the war in the Middle East disrupts global energy markets, Europe is facing renewed questions about how dependent it remains on imported fossil fuels.
In a debate, the eight political groups in the European Parliament discussed how the EU should respond: from stabilising energy prices and protecting consumers to investing in renewables, strengthening energy grids, considering the role of nuclear power, reforming energy markets and reducing reliance on external suppliers.
The Cypriot presidency of the Council of the EU and the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, also took part in the debate.
