John F. Kennedy Jr.’s Eerie Final Words Before Fatal Crash Revealed | E! News

Before John F. Kennedy Jr. and his wife Carolyn Bessette were killed in a 1999 plane crash, he told his flight instructor that he wanted to fly the vehicle "alone" and without supervision flying to Martha’s Vineyard on July 16, 1999, according to a report from the National Transportation Safety Board. At the time, John—the son of late President John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis—was in the process of obtaining his instrument rating, an aviation certification allowing pilots to fly by solely relying on cockpit instruments rather than visual references. Though his flight instructor told NTSB investigators that John "had the ability to fly the airplane without a visible horizon," he noted the attorney "may have had difficulty performing additional tasks under such conditions" given that other pilots reported hazy visibility due to the weather on that July 16 night. "He also stated that he would not have felt comfortable with [JFK Jr.] conducting night flight operations on a route similar to the one flown on," the NTSB report read, "and in weather conditions similar to those that existed on, the night of the accident." The crash is expected to be included in the March 26 finale of ‘Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette,’ a biographical account of the titular couple’s lives starring Paul Anthony Kelly and Sarah Pidgeon airing on FX and Hulu.
