MEPs focus on the necessity for a sustainable ceasefire in Northeast Syria
Members of the European Parliament and representatives of the European Commission are set to discuss violence against civilians in Northeast Syria and the need to uphold a sustainable ceasefire.
A vote on a resolution is scheduled for 12 February.
In January 2026, Syrian military forces rapidly regained control of large areas of the country previously held by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in Northeast Syria.
A ceasefire has been in place since 20 January 2026, although multiple violations have been reported. While Arab-majority communities in the affected areas welcomed the SDF’s withdrawal, thousands of Kurdish residents were forced to flee.
According to the International Organization for Migration, approximately 150,000 people have been displaced.
