European Parliament responds to Trump administration’s claims

The European Parliament has expressed strong support for Greenland and Denmark after President Trump’s administration repeated claims that the United States should acquire Greenland.

MEPs stressed that Greenland is not for sale and that decisions about its future belong only to Greenland and Denmark. They called on the European Commission and EU countries to provide concrete and tangible support to both Greenland and Denmark, in line with EU principles, international law, and NATO commitments.

Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. The United States maintains a limited military presence on the island at the Pituffik Space Base under a long-standing defence agreement alongside their NATO commitments, under which the US pledged to help defend Greenland against potential aggression.
