Over 85% of monitored bathing sites in the EU are judged as excellent, and 96% meet the minimum quality standards, according to an assessment carried out by the European Environment Agency.

This is thanks to systematic monitoring and management introduced under the EU’s Bathing Water Directive. The directive lays down rules for the monitoring, classification, and management of bathing water quality, as well as informing the public.
