How the inner border controls may have an effect on EU travel-free Schengen space – Parliament debate
Parliament will discuss the implications of the reintroduction of border controls for the future of the Schengen area.
On 9 September, the German Federal Ministry of the Interior announced the reintroduction of controls at its land borders that did not already have checks (they were already in place at the borders with France, Poland, Czechia, Austria and Switzerland). The move, which was aimed at limiting irregular migration and protecting internal security, prompted concerns about the future of the Schengen free-travel area, given Germany’s central geographical position in Europe.
