Election 2024 updates: Kamala Harris’ VP search enters ultimate countdown
The pool of vice presidential contenders for Kamala Harris has narrowed to Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, according to Reuters.
Harris is expected to announce her choice for running mate on Tuesday ahead of their first rally together in Philadelphia that evening, two people with knowledge of the plan told NBC News.
But those individuals still said the timing of the announcement may change based on when the vice president makes her final decision or if there’s a leak to the press.
The Tuesday announcement is set to emulate previous VP presentations, with online video and social media playing a part, in addition to a fundraising pitch.
Shapiro, Walz, and Arizona Senator Mark Kelly all interviewed at Harris’s residence in Washington DC on Sunday, with the former astronaut muddying the waters somewhat by tweeting and then deleting a post in which he declared, “Now my mission is serving Arizonans,” seemingly suggesting he is no longer in contention.
Meanwhile, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump was at a rally in Atlanta, Georgia, with his own running mate JD Vance on Saturday as his campaign doubled down on his attacks on Harris’s ethnicity.
Hospitality workers’ union backs Harris over Trump
UNITE HERE, the hospitality workers union, has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris in the presidential race against former President Donald Trump.
Union president Gwen Mills said Trump’s promise of making tips tax-free was just a “play” for votes while Harris has more substantially supported unions.
The endorsement means that the union is committing to having its members knock on more than 3.3 million doors in key states such as Pennsylvania, Michigan, Nevada, Arizona, and North Carolina.
