The human rights scenario in Sudan and the EU’s technique
Against the backdrop of the current acute humanitarian and human rights crisis in Sudan, Parliament is bringing together expert voices to examine the situation on the ground and assess how the European Union can strengthen its response.
The discussion will address the EU’s role in alleviating the suffering of the Sudanese people and contributing to a path toward justice and peace.
Guests include:
• Salih Mahmoud Osman – Sudanese human rights lawyer and Sakharov Prize laureate
• Mona Rishmawi – UN Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on the Sudan
• Mohaned Mustafa El-Nour – Christian Solidarity Worldwide
• Eric Perdison – World Food Programme
• Salwa Elsadik – International Federation for Rights and Developments (IFRD)
• Maciej Popowski, Director-General, DG ECHO, European Commission
The debate is organised by Parliament’s subcommittee on human rights and the committee on development. In March 2025, the European Parliament adopted a plenary resolution on the severe political, humanitarian and human rights crisis in Sudan, in particular the sexual violence and child rape. In it, MEPs called on all parties to the conflict in Sudan to cease hostilities immediately, seek a negotiated solution and fulfil their Jeddah Declaration commitments. They strongly condemned the indiscriminate attacks on civilians and widespread sexual violence against women and children committed by both sides and urged all parties to stop these horrendous acts and war crimes.
In September 2025, EU member states extended EU restrictive measures for another year against those responsible for destabilising Sudan and obstructing its political transition, following their initial imposition in October 2023.
