A few hours earlier, the Azerbaijani authorities had reported the deaths of four police officers and two Azerbaijani civilians in a mine explosion in Nagorno-Karabakh, and accused a group of Armenian separatist “saboteurs” of committing these acts of “terrorism”.

These six individuals were killed in the explosion of their vehicles on mines on a road between Choucha and Fizouli, two cities in the Azerbaijani-controlled Nagorno-Karabakh region, as stated by the Azerbaijani security services. According to them, the police officers were killed around 4:30 am (2:30 am in Paris) in a tunnel in the Khojavend district while heading to the site of an anti-tank mine explosion that had hit the vehicle of the two civilians in the same area. The security services specified that the two civilians killed were employees of the Azerbaijani road agency.

Ces nouveaux incidents meurtriers interviennent alors qu’un pas vers un apaisement des tensions au Haut-Karabakh a été accompli récemment avec l’arrivée d’aide humanitaire dans cette région sécessionniste.

At the beginning of August, Armenia requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council due to the worsening humanitarian situation in the region. The Lachin corridor, the only land link between Armenia and Karabakh, was initially obstructed by Azerbaijanis claiming to be environmental protesters. Later, on July 11th, Baku established a roadblock at the entrance of this route citing security reasons.

During the meeting of the United Nations Security Council, held on August 16, France, the United Kingdom, and the United States urged Baku to ensure free movement on the Lachin road, but no statement or resolution was passed at the end of the meeting – a partial failure for the Armenians.
