Biden ‘completely’ urges Israel to cease firing at UN peacekeepers in Lebanon | DW News

US President Joe Biden says he is ‘absolutely’ urging Israel to stop firing at UN peacekeepers in Lebanon. It follows two incidents in 48 hours.
The peacekeeping force, known as UNIFIL, says explosions hit its headquarters on Friday in the Lebanese village of Naqoura, injuring two personnel. That followed another strike on Thursday in which two soldiers were hurt. Israel’s military says its forces were responding to an ‘immediate threat’ close by. The leaders of France, Italy and Spain have described the incidents as serious violations of international law.
Humanitarian groups are warning that the war between Israel and Hezbollah is pushing Lebanon into an ever-widening crisis.
As the fighting escalates, governments continue to evacuate their citizens. Beirut airport is still operating but, because of fears over safety, most international airlines have suspended flights. Earlier this week some stranded EU citizens managed to fly out on a Belgian military plane. DW’s Rosie Birchard reports.
