Why is China ramping up its army spending? | DW News

China has been on a military spending spree for the last decade. Its 2026 defense budget is almost seven percent larger than the year before. New ships, advanced fighters and more nuclear weapons are expected—exact spending targets are not publicly available. Experts say the Chinese People’s Liberation Army is focused on reunification with Taiwan. Beijing sees the island as a renegade province. Analysts say the PLA is drawing lessons from the Russia’s war in Ukraine as well as the US and Israel attack on Iran. The US still has the largest military budget in the world, but China is catching up.
