The US military says it is successfully enforcing a naval blockade on Iran. According to a post on X by US Central Command, US forces have completely halted economic trade going into and out of Iran.
Centcom commander Brad Cooper said in a statement that the blockade of Iran’s ports has been fully implemented and that US forces are maintaining maritime superiority in the Middle East.
The US blockade comes after Iran effectively shut down shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global waterway for transporting oil and gas. Iran closed the waterway during a month-long war with the US and Israel, which sent oil and gas prices soaring and disrupted the global economy. Some 5,000 people have been killed.
