Thousands of people who travel every day between the southern tip of Spain and the British territory of Gibraltar will no longer have to cross a physical border from Wednesday. The removal of a fence at midnight marked the official opening of the border, allowing people to now move freely across. It is the result of an historic agreement between the EU and UK that came after years of post-Brexit wrangling. Gibraltar, which has a population of around 38,000 is now aligned with the Schengen free travel zone and EU customs union.
