Southampton’s miserable return to the Premier League has come to its inevitable conclusion, with relegation confirmed after a defeat to Spurs.
The writing was on the wall for Southampton – and had been for some time.
To earn a stay of execution, they needed Wolves to either draw or lose to Ipswich AND to avoid a defeat of their own against Spurs.
But Jorgen Strand Larsen’s late winner at Portman Road put one nail in the coffin on Saturday and a 3-1 loss in north London on Sunday the season-defining second that confirmed a swift return to the Championship.
No Premier League side has ever been relegated as early as matchday 31.
