Protests in Georgia: president Zourabichvili speaks within the European Parliament

‘Georgians see what is happening as a deposition of their freedom, their future and in some ways their independence.’

Today, Georgia’s president, Salome Zourabichvili, addressed the European Parliament in Strasbourg to discuss the political situation in the country.

Protests emerged after the Georgian government decided to pause the country’s EU accession process following the disputed parliamentary elections in October 2024, in which the ruling Georgian Dream party claimed victory.

MEPs rejected the outcome of the scrutiny and called for new elections after the findings of electoral violations, including documented cases of intimidation of voters, vote manipulation, interference with election observers and the media and reported manipulation involving electronic voting machines.
