Parliament debates the EU response to excessive climate occasions

In early 2026, Portugal, southern Italy, Malta, and Greece were hit by severe weather events, including cyclone Harry and storm Kristin. These storms caused casualties and significant damage to coastal areas, bringing floods, landslides, and the highest waves ever recorded in the Mediterranean.

In response to these extreme weather events, Parliament discusses on how to strengthen the EU’s readiness, preparedness, and solidarity mechanisms.

Members of the European Parliament question the Commission’s representatives on the action the EU is taking to prevent and prepare for natural disasters, following the launch of the 2025 EU’s Preparedness Union Strategy and focus on the support for affected EU countries, including enhanced civil protection measures and related funding.
