German Chancellor Friedrich Merz says 80 percent of Syrians in Germany should return to their homeland within the next three years. He made the comments alongside Syria’s interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa. It’s Al Sharaa’s first trip to Berlin since ousting longtime dictator Bashar al-Assad in 2024. The focus of talks has been reconstruction, and the future of the around ONE million Syrians in Germany. Many arrived as refugees around a decade ago during the peak of the migrant crisis in Europe. Al-Sharaa’s visit has also sparked protests over his past as an Islamist leader. With insights from Middle East expert Christian Hanelt from the Bertelsmann Foundation, and DW political correspondent Bernd Riegert.
