MEPs focus on the way forward for the digital euro with a European Central Bank consultant

The committee on economic and monetary affairs examines the latest developments in the digital euro project with Piero Cipollone, Member of the European Central Bank Executive Board (ECB).

The ECB continues its work on the digital euro, including preparations for a pilot project expected to start in 2027. The pilot will help test the technical and operational aspects of a potential digital version of the euro, which could be introduced later in the decade.

MEPs and Mr Cipollone will discuss the project’s progress, recent agreements to support digital euro payments, and the next steps in the legislative process. Any decision to launch a digital euro will depend on the adoption of the necessary EU legislation.
