The Oscar winner explained that fame quickly distorted everyday interactions, saying people stopped asking his name or what he did, making it difficult to separate what felt genuine from what came with celebrity status. In Peru, however, Matthew said no one knew him as a movie star, only by the name “Mateo.” This gave him the chance to form authentic relationships without the weight of fame attached.
