The Scottish FA’s key match incident panel revealed on Friday that Celtic should NOT have been awarded the match-winning penalty at Motherwell – a call that dented Hearts’ title hopes. The panel voted 2-1 that it wasn’t a penalty.
Celtic were given a spot-kick deep into stoppage time at Fir Park with the game level at 2-2.
Referee John Beaton hadn’t given it initially, but VAR Andrew Dallas sent him to the monitor, believing Sam Nicholson had handled the ball while challenging Auston Trusty.
Beaton spent around 20 seconds looking at it — and pointed to the spot. Kelechi Iheanacho scored the winner.
That result meant Celtic only needed to beat Hearts on the final day to win the title – but a draw here would have left them needing a three‑goal victory.
