Though Joseph ultimately pleaded not guilty to lewd and lascivious behavior involving unlawful sexual activity with a minor, Jim Bob had warned him in an email, "You are just going to have to accept the situation at this point." Jim Bob wrote in the March 25 message, per records obtained by E! News from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office in Arkansas, "It’s also fine to pray that God would have mercy on you, but you’re probably gonna face major consequences for several years to come."
