Protesters have gathered in Istanbul for a mass rally called by the country’s main opposition after the arrest of the city’s mayor, Ekrem Imamoglu.
The rally is the first such CHP-led gathering since Tuesday, and comes on the eve of the Muslim celebration of Eid – marking the end of Ramadan. Imamoglu’s detention earlier this month sparked 10-days of protests – the biggest street demonstrations in more than a decade. He’s widely seen as the only Turkish politician capable of challenging President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. DW’s Julia Hahn reports from Istanbul.
