Indonesia’s multi-billion-dollar food initiative to provide all school children with free meals has been plagued by gross corruption from top officials of its oversight agency. Introduced in 2025 by President Prabowo Subianto, the Free Nutritious Meals program was enacted to fight child malnutrition and boost local economies, but from the beginning, observers have slammed the much-hyped program for its inflated budget, poor quality and food hygiene, and accessibility. Now, after a recent corruption scandal, the government plans to “refocus” its approach and pledges for budget efficiency.
