Greenland’s PM Jens-Fredrik Nielsen addresses MEPs amid geopolitical tensions

In May 2025, US President Donald Trump stated that he could not rule out America annexing the strategically important island of Greenland. Following this statement, both Greenland’s and Danish authorities supported the autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, stressing Greenland’s right to self-determination and stating that Greenland is “not for sale”.

The European Parliament’s security and defence committee visited Greenland from 16 to 18 September to see the situation on the ground and express solidarity with the territory. The committee Chair Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann said: “In close cooperation with Denmark, we stand with Greenland and its people. Greenland’s future will be determined by its people and it will always find a strong partnership with the EU."
