Fox News host Jessica Tarlov on Wednesday called out GOP officials after President Donald Trump pumped the brakes on his sweeping tariffs that fueled chaos for financial markets around the world over the past week.
“What always sticks out to me when we go on this Trumpian merry-go-round is the ritualistic humiliation that he subjects for people who work for him,” Tarlov told her co-hosts on “The Five.”
Trump officials who praised his “Liberation Day” tariffs suddenly found themselves spinning his 90-day pause on import taxes for most countries except China, a reversal the president shared to Truth Social on Wednesday.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent spoke of Trump’s “successful negotiating strategy” following the announcement that led to markets rebounding after roughly a week of losses.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also scolded the media on Wednesday for not reading Trump’s 1987 book, “The Art of the Deal.”
“You clearly failed to see what President Trump is doing here,” she declared.
“You tried to say that the rest of the world would be moved closer to China, when in fact we’ve seen the opposite effect.”
Tarlov noted that Trump himself “admitted” that his tariffs pause was no “art of the deal.” The president, when asked about how the state of the bond market played into his decision-making, said he saw how people were “getting a little queasy.”
“He had to cave,” Tarlov stressed.
She later referred to Bessent claiming that Trump’s tariffs U-turn was his plan “all along.”
“So, you were OK then with being made out to be a complete liar because you’ve been doing interviews on our network, going on the Sunday shows, saying, ‘Absolutely not, we’re not capitulating on this, we’re not going back on it,’” Tarlov said.
