Elizabeth Smart doesn’t want anyone to lose hope. The 38-year-old—who was abducted from her Utah home in 2002 at age 14 and rescued by police officers nine months later—shared her one piece of advice for those invested in the disappearance of Savannah Guthrie’s mom Nancy Guthrie, who went missing on Jan. 31 and still hasn’t been found. "I know what law enforcement will tell you if a person disappears and they’re not found within the first 24 to 48 hours—the chances of their survival drop down to almost zero percent," Elizabeth told hosts Keltie Knight, Jac Vanek and Becca Tobin during the Feb. 26 episode of their ‘Ladygang’ podcast. "It’s almost like they’re dead. But I just always feel like we can’t give up because if that was the mentality around my case, then I wouldn’t be here today." And while Elizabeth—who was saved from captivity after two passersby on the street recognized her captors Brian David Mitchell and Wanda Ileen Barzee from an ‘America’s Most Wanted’ episode—noted that the outcome of her missing persons case was rare, she also emphasized that it’s not impossible. "I did come back and there are other victims who do come back," the activist continued.
