President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday lauded the findings of House Republicans who called for a criminal investigation into former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), warning that she “could be in a lot of trouble” for her work on a congressional probe of the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection.
In a message posted to his Truth Social platform, Trump praised Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-Ga.), the chair of the House Administration Subcommittee on Oversight, for “a job well done” after his panel’s Tuesday report claimed that Cheney may have illegally tampered with a witness and encouraged that witness to commit perjury.
It alleged that Cheney likely broke “numerous federal laws” and said “these violations should be investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.”
Cheney had already responded to the Republican counteroffensive prior to the Truth Social post. In a Tuesday statement, she accused Trump allies of waging a “malicious and cowardly” attack on the truth to cover up his role in the insurrection, which saw Trump supporters riot in Washington in a bid to keep him in power amid the end of his first presidential term.
“January 6th showed Donald Trump for who [he] … really is — a cruel and vindictive man who allowed violent attacks to continue against our Capitol and law enforcement officers while he watched television,” Cheney wrote in her statement.
She claimed that the Loudermilk report “intentionally disregards the truth” and “instead fabricates lies and defamatory allegations.”
Trump has long pushed for Cheney to be prosecuted for her work on the House committee that looked into the 2021 riots. In an interview earlier this month, Trump told NBC’s “Meet the Press” that he believes members of that panel — which had Cheney as a vice chair from 2021 to 2023 — “should go to jail.”

In response, Cheney said last week that Trump was attempting to undermine “the rule of law and the foundations of our republic.”
